If you have a few moments spare and are still reeling with shock and disappointment about the World Cup (I know it’s been a while but there is a man on my street who can’t even look at cups and who looks like he might have a heart attack if you shout the word WORLD at him loud enough) then you might find solace in the following story. Now, while I myself wasn’t too concerned with the disappointment that was our football team – I was always rubbish at sports at school, what do you expect? – I have seen the effect of being concerned all around me: at work, people who are still upset about this have become very lazy. What I mean is that because they constantly have this on their mind, they can’t be bothered to do the simplest things to help the place run more efficiently. In other words, recycling goes out the window, leaving lights on becomes a regular thing and wasting energy in general becomes the norm.
It’s the same when anything tragic happens; everyone forgets about that gaping hole in the Ozone layer – yes, sadly it is still there, despite what the politicians might tell you – and just gets on with their life, as though the world can mend and heal itself without any help from us. But here’s the thing: the world has had enough of trying to fix and heal itself.
And wouldn’t you have? You try finding a plaster big enough to cover such an enormous wound... Thankfully, there are people like me and you (if you also don’t love football more than life itself) around to remind them football lovers that recycling and energy saving is important! There is a very positive side to all this, of course; when we do start doing REALLY well at football again, that pride and enthusiasm is bound to translate to energy saving and the like. Now, when that happens it will be a fantastic day, and it will happen, I am sure. This is England after all people! We’ll get there in the end.
